Auburn, Alabama is home to many schools, with Auburn University the first to come to mind amon
g many people. As a result students are a large market targeted by apartments and rental housing in the city. The good news is that your chances of finding a place that suits your needs exactly are good, but the bad news is that you'll be competing with other students for the nice apartments.
Here are some tips specifically for students transferring to Auburn Alabama, but many of these can apply to apartment-hunters in general:
Know what you need - What are your priorities? Rent in the $300-400 range? Walking distance to campus? Also, list down your secondary priorities which may include such items as broadband access, a study hall, a gym and swimming pool, etcetera.
Allow yourself lots of time - Being in a hurry can mean bad deals. Have your list handy, and visit as many places as possible that meet your requirements (which you narrowed down during your internet research. You did research on the net first, right?).
Bring your documents - This can be credit documents, personal references, bank balance statements, tax returns, or anything you think might prove that you're in a better position to pay rent than the next guy.
Detail check - Closely check everything. This includes the actual unit they're offering you, wear and tear, space for the stuff you plan to bring, fixtures and utilities, and the small print on the lease form.
Check the surroundings - The grounds, the neighbors, the neighborhood, how far it is to the bus stop or to your promised parking slot, how far it is to the bank, the mall, the police station, the hospital, the convenience store, etcetera.
Ask - When there's something that isn't clear, ask. Get the name of the person you're getting info from.
